The main goal of the player is always to collect the highest amount of points, while getting rid of all their cards. The history of the game is complicated and it is hard to say, where exactly it originated from. Some people try to find links between the game and Spanish immigration to America, which resulted in bringing Conquian there.
In China, a game called Kon Khin was discovered, and the similarity of the names is striking. As a result, some people speculate that the historical counterpart of rummy was created from the combination of rules, brought by Portuguese sailors (like with Mau Mau), and Chinese card games. Another theory also links the origins of the game with emigration, this time of the French people, and the beginnings of poker (based upon the similarity in hands). There is also a theory which claims that the game called Whiskey Poker is where rummy came from.
It claims that the name of the game evolved from Whiskey Poker to Rum Poker, which over the course of many years was shortened to Rum, and later became Rummy, which is the name we know currently.
A similar game called Gin Rummy enjoyed great popularity in the US in the 30s and 40s, in part because this variant of rummy was very popular among the Hollywood and Broadway stars.
Rummy in an Oscar film
A game of rummy can be seen in Oscar and Golden Globe-winning The Apartment from 1960. The game is played by Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. Over the course of many years, rummy saw many modifications and variants, such as the Turkish rummy, Oklahoma rummy, Buracco rummy or the aforementioned Gin rummy. In this manual we are going to focus on the most popular variant of rummy in Poland.
